Parents - we have had concerns regarding people parking at Crotty Park at the end of the day to meet children and backing out onto the service road between the two buildings from our bus drivers. If you must park at Crotty after school, please consider parking across the street from park in the baseball field parking lot. You enter the lot from Shipyard and then will pull forward out onto the service road. We hope this will help keep the flow of traffic moving and keep students safe. Thank you!

North Campus car drop-off will be changing slightly with the dropping temperatures. We will have staff members that will meet students at the cars then direct students into the vestibule where temperatures will be taken. Parents should stay until students are cleared, then the outside staff will direct parents to leave. This will increase our wait time slightly. You can help by making sure your child has their mask on when the car stops and making sure all materials (bookbag, water, lunches etc.) are close by the student to exit the car quickly. Our doors open at 7:35 and close at 8:05. We appreciate everyone’s continued help and support.

Eighth grade students spent the day on a virtual field trip to our state capital, Springfield! They began their day by completing virtual tours, photo tours, and website searches related to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, The Old State Capitol, the Lincoln Home, and the Lincoln Tomb at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Students then tested their knowledge of these sites in a game of Kahoot. They finished their virtual field trip by creating Lincoln inspired pretzel log cabins.

Paul Guerino, guest speaker from the Chicago Field Museum, shares his knowledge on Geology with Seneca’s Sixth Grade Class
Guerino Really Rocks!
Hands were raised as guest speaker Paul Guerino sparked enthusiasm in the classroom. Seneca Grade School students listened attentively as Mr. Guerino spoke on the formation of acid rain, the effects of acid rain on the environment, as well as rocks and erosion. Guerino’s presentation served a culminating activity for the unit of study in Science teacher, Julie Yunker-Craig’s classroom. “Mr. Guerino connects with the students. He presents the material with enthusiasm and knowledge”, states Craig. Guerino gains the students’ attention by painting a picture. “Pretend you are a leaf on a tree,” tells Guerino, walking the students through the effects of acidity on plant life. Both Paul and Julie served on the instructional education team for the IAAP (Illinois Association of Aggregate Producers) summer teacher workshop program. Julie Yunker-Craig has served as the Keynote speaker for the IAAP convention in past years. Guerino makes sand slides and rock samples for the IAAP convention as well as many schools throughout Illinois. Seneca’s sixth grade students benefited from Mr. Guerino’s knowledge on geology this past week. Guerino conducted a sand slide presentation and microscope lab with Craig’s classes. Guerino and Craig co-taught a rock identification lab including the construction of rock kits. The students’ eyes light up when Guerino brings rock samples for them to keep. This lifelong teacher really rocks!

On Wednesday afternoon, kindergarten students boarded the Polar Express for a special trip to the North Pole. Students listened to The Polar Express, a children's book written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg.
The story is about a young boy who hears a train whistle in the distance only to find the Polar Express waiting outside his window ready to take him on a journey to the North Pole. The boy then boards the train, which is filled with chocolate and candy, as well as many other children in their pajamas. After the train reaches the North Pole, the boy is handpicked by Santa to receive the first gift of Christmas. He asks Santa for a bell from one of the reindeer's harnesses and puts it in the pocket of his robe. On the train ride home, the boy discovers the bell has fallen through a hole in his pocket. Christmas morning, his sister finds a small package for him under the tree. He opens the box and discovers the bell, delivered by Santa who found it on the seat of his sleigh. When the boy rings the bell, both he and his sister marvel at the beautiful sound, but neither of their parents can hear it ring. The magic of the bell is that it rings for those who truly believe.
After listening to the story, kindergarten students disembarked the Polar Express and heard the sound of bells ringing. Children found a special bell attached to their seats of the train. Kindergarten students later rotated through the three kindergarten classrooms where they ate chocolate milk, donuts, and candy canes, painted a picture of the Polar Express, and played a Christmas reading game. The afternoon ended with a variety of games and relays in the gym. It was a magical, memorable day in kindergarten.

On Thursday, September 19th the 2nd grade classes took a field trip to the LaSalle County Soil and Water Conservation Districts Environmental Activity Day at Shabbona Park. Conservation and environmental professionals covered topics in conservation, wildlife, agriculture, and the environment. Students were in groups and rotated through the hands on centers. The day was very warm but fun was had by all!

Four 8th grade students spent the day on Friday at Joliet Junior college. Samuel C., Mohammad A., Sophia F., and Chrissy A. spent the first day of a two-day competition learning all about hydraulic and pneumatic power. Representatives from Caterpillar lead the instruction, demonstrating how to use the tools, before they set the students free to learn by doing. Students built hydraulic lift and rotating machines in order to practice for their competition build in November. Those four students will spend the next two months planning and building prototype machines to complete the task of moving a wooden dowel with only fluid power. Good luck tackling this challenge, team!

The kindergarten students had a great time at Heap’s Giant Pumpkin Farm! Students learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin and were introduced to a variety of pumpkins and squash grown on the farm. We took a hayrack ride out to the pumpkin patch where the children were able to walk around and see the vines, leaves, flowers, and pumpkins. The students enjoyed seeing the chickens, goats, sheep, donkey, and calf that live on the farm. Playing in Milo’s Castle, climbing on the hay bales, and crawling through the corn bins were some highlights of the trip. Each student was able to choose a pumpkin to bring home too. The students had a wonderful day of fun, learning, and exploration!

3rd grade playing Rock, Paper, Scissors Football.
- One player from one team starts in the middle on both sides of the football.
- Players alternate running, one at a time, toward a running member of the opposite team.
- Players stop in front of each other and play rock paper scissors, whichever player wins keeps running forward, the player that does not win runs back toward his/her line. If the player with
the ball loses, they drop the ball and the other person picks it up.
- As soon as one player loses at rock paper scissors, the next person in their line may run to meet the person who won.
- The goal is to cross the goal line.
