December Newsletter 2009-10
As winter begins to set in, we find ourselves already past the midpoint of the 2nd Quarter and quickly moving toward the end. Please be aware that the 2nd Quarter will end on December 18th and that reports will be sent home with students on January 8th. I have always believed that a school year that seems to be moving along at a quick pace is the sign of positive and productive one. Due to the efforts of our staff and student body, that belief directly applies to the current year. As principal, I feel that our general school climate consistently gives students an excellent opportunity to learn the necessary curriculum items for their respective grade level. It also helps to work with such a great community of supportive parents. Thank you for your efforts in working with our staff. We look forward to working with you toward continued success with our students for the rest of the school year.
In honor of Veterans Day, Mr. Novario and Mr. Giertz collaborated with Bill Bernadoni of Country Companies Insurance to send special care packages to soldiers in serving Iraq and Afghanistan. These packages included DVDs and letters from the students. In the letters, the students described life here at the South Campus and asked questions about the soldier’s experience in Iraq or Afghanistan. On behalf of the South Campus, I would like to thank Mr. Novario, Mr. Giertz, and Mr. Bernadoni for organizing this outreach activity for our students. It’s a great way to support our troops and a great learning experience for our students.
Another important activity that took place in November was a drug and violence prevention program provided by North Central Behavioral Systems via their Educational Services Department. The program was provided for all students here at the South Campus and involved a variety of age-appropriate topics. These topics included the negative effects of specific drugs as well as suggestions and strategies to refuse them if necessary. Students also learned about making responsible choices, resolving conflicts peacefully, and respecting themselves and others. Classroom activities included videos, worksheets, class discussions, and role playing. I would like to thank North Central for their continued cooperation and we look forward to working with them in the future.
In an effort to improve communication lines with the parents, the South Campus staff has been working on creating grade level webpages which are available on our website @ www.sgs170.org. These webpages are being created to provide parents with important dates and information pertaining to specific grade levels. Once you have entered the website, simply click on ‘South Campus” on the menu located on the left side of the screen. Once you have entered the South Campus page, click on the specific grade level needed. I encourage everyone to visit our website to access a variety of useful pages.
