SENECA GRADE SCHOOL

BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

 

The Board of Education met for their regular scheduled meeting at 7:00 p.m. on November 18, 2009 at the Seneca Grade School North Campus Board Room.

 

President Bedeker called for roll call.

 

Present:  Baker, Barla, Quigley, Roseland, Sangston, Thompson, and Bedeker.

Absent:  All Present

 

Sangston moved to accept the minutes from the October 21, 2009; seconded by Barla.

Nays:  None

 

Hearing of Citizens:  Supt. Misener introduced student of the month for September, Kyle Boyd.  He is the son of James and Martha Boyd.  He also introduced Jacquelyn Newberry, October’s student of the month.  She is the daughter of John and Patty Newberry.  He complimented both Kyle and Jacquelyn for being excellent role models and leaders in and outside the classroom.  Board congratulated the students on their achievements. 

 

Hearing of Teachers:  Suzanne Jackson, 1st grade teacher, explained how her students are currently using the new A/R testing daily.  She is very happy with their reading progress so early in the year.  Students are currently studying Native Americans and will be finishing up by making their ownership sticks which represent students as if they were part of a Native American tribe.  Kathleen Stadel, 5-8 Sp. Ed. self-contained teacher, reviewed some of the successes students have in her classroom.  Students wrote letters to Veterans and are busy planning their non traditional Thanksgiving Fest.  One activity they have planned in December includes baking and planning a Christmas bake sale for students and faculty at the south campus. 

 

Barla moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report and investments as given by secretary:  Education $401,067.34; Building $71,226.42; Transportation $16,106.75, IMRF $16,785.44; Tort $1,643.47; Bond $147,795.00, Life/Safety 11,648.60 Totaling $666,273.02; seconded by Sangston.

Quigley moved to pay the following monthly bills:  Education $53,633.82; Building $33,824.24; Transportation $12,473.30; Tort $1,643.47; Bond $147,795.00, Life/Safety 11,648.60, Total $261,018.43; seconded by Thompson.

Thompson moved to amend the following board policies, 2:20, 2:40, 2:70E, 2:110, 3:40, 4:30, 4:40, 4:100, 4:110, 4:110AP2, 4:140, 4:140E, 5:30, 5:90, 5:100, 5:120, 5:120AP2, 5:250, 5:330, 6:340, 7:100, 7:190, and 8:100; seconded by Barla.

Nays:  None

 

Roseland moved to accept the tentative levy at a rate of 1.3004; seconded by Baker.  Supt. Misener announced that the Truth and Taxation meeting will be held in December before the next board meeting at 6:45 p.m. at the Seneca Grade School North Campus.  EAV is anticipated to drop .25 cents.

Barla moved to approve the completed South Campus Health/Life Safety Amendment; seconded by Quigley.

Board directed Supt. Misener to further explore natural gas contract options.  

 

Principal Severson highlighted the survey taken during the Parent Teacher Conference.  South Campus had 77 percent parent attendance, which he was very pleased with.  Results also showed that parents are heavily using the parent viewer and Revtrac online payment option.  Staff took part during SIP day with valuable training in using the AED and doing CPR.  On November 20th, midterms will be mailed home.  The 2nd quarter will end Friday, December 18, before the students go home for Christmas.  The band and chorus concert will be held December 8th at the South Campus. 

 

Principal McGhee also reviewed her parent teacher conference surveys.  She was pleased with the 100% contact teachers made with parents.  The Reading Night, held November 18th, was well attended, with over 45 families coming and listening to an evening of story telling and music with Mike Anderson.  On Tuesday, November 24th, third grade will have there annual Thanksgiving Feast.  Fourth grade will hold their Living Museum where students will portray famous authors for parents on Tuesday, November 24th at 7:00 p.m.  Saturday, December 5th will be Lunch with Santa sponsored by the P.S.O., held at the South Campus.  The K-4 music program will be Thursday, December 10th at 6:30 p.m. at the South Campus. 

 

 

 

Barla moved to go into Executive Session at 7:47 p.m. for personnel and legal; seconded by Sangston.

Thompson moved to return to Open Session at 7:59 p.m.; seconded by Barla.

Thompson moved to hire Terry Maxwell, as the assistant 6th grade boys’ basketball coach for the 2009-2010 school year; seconded by Quigley.
