BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

 

The Board of Education met for special public hearing on transfer of funds at 6:45 p.m. on May 21, 2008 at the Seneca Grade School North Campus Board Room

 

President Blalock called for roll call

 

Present:  Baker, Barla, Claggett, Thompson and Blalock

Absent:  Roseland and Bedeker

 

With no one was present from the public with questions, Claggett moved at 6:52 p.m. to close the hearing; seconded by Thompson.

With no one was present from the public with questions, Barla moved at 6:59 p.m. to close the hearing; seconded by Thompson.

 

The Board of Education met for their regular scheduled meeting at 7:00 p.m. on May 21, 2008 at the Seneca Grade School North Campus Board Room.

 

President Blalock called for roll call.

Absent:  Roseland and Bedeker

 

Barla moved to accept the minutes of the April 16, 2008 meeting; seconded by Claggett.

 

Roseland arrived at 7:05 p.m.

Hearing of Citizens:  No comments

 

 

 

Hearing of Teachers:  Tanya Keech, 7/8 grade science teacher, reported that 7th grade have just finished the skeleton, muscles and skin unit and will be dissecting owl pellets.  The 8th graders have just finished a chemistry unit and will be finishing up the year with a first aide unit. 

 

Baker moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report as given by the Secretary and bring back from investments the following to cover payroll and monthly bills:  Education $411,490.82, Building $60,872.99, Transportation $21,130.34, IMRF $16,668.73, Tort $58,623.00 Totaling $662,357.13; seconded by Thompson.

 

Yeas:  Baker, Barla, Claggett, Roseland, Thompson and Blalock.

Nays:  None

 

Claggett moved to transfer $300,000. from transportation to the education fund; seconded by Thompson.

Claggett moved to pay the following monthly bills:  Education $82,911.44, Building $29,132.17, Transportation $16,071.23, Tort $58,623.00, Spec. Ed. 63,460.00, LEASE $7,222.50, Totaling $280,309.09; seconded by Barla.

Barla moved to approve the waiver request; seconded by Claggett.

Thompson moved to approve the 5 year contract with SimplexGrinnell for the inspections of sprinklers and fire alarm systems; seconded Roseland.

Direction was given for repair of the South Campus gym floor and repair of the North Campus genie lift.

 

Principal Severson introduced March student of the month Jacob Klepk.  Jacob is the son of Denise Claggett and Joe Klepk.  He enjoys playing basketball, baseball and is on the track team at SGS.  Jacob is also on the scholastic team, member of voices and a 5th grade helper.  Principal Severson also announced April student of the month Vanessa Osmond and May student of the month Jena Culbreth.  The Board congratulated and thanked them and their parents for coming and being great role models for other students.

Principal Severson congratulated all the track participates that completed May 10th at state track in Peoria.  The 7th grade 4 x 400 relay team, Cortney Helms, Chelsie McCormick, Kylie Russell and Shawna Bratcher  finished 5th.  Mackenzie Juricic Madison Warning and Alyssa Applebee also placed in the pole vault.  May 17th was the student of the month breakfast.  Thank you to everyone that attended and to the cafeteria staff that prepared a very nice breakfast.  May 22nd will be step-up day for the 4th graders.  They will spend the morning at the South Campus shadowing the 5th graders.  May 23rd will be the athletic awards assembly followed by P.S.O. picnic and games for the students.  May 27th will be the 8th grade class trip to Great America.  May 28th will be the 7th grade field trip to the Science and Industry Museum.  On May 29th is the academic assembly for students and at night is the 8th grade class graduation dance.  Closing out the month will be the 8th grade graduation on Friday, May 30th at 7:00.  Principal Severson also discussed 5th grade schedule changes for next year. 

 

Principal McGhee reported on the Kindergarten Spring Open House on May 1st.  There was nearly 100% attendance and participation for the Night of Nursery Rhymes.  Students performed rhymes for the audience then shared work with friends and families in their classrooms.  Congratulations to the Kindergarten teaching staff. for a wonderful evening.  On April 30th, North Campus was host to the Health Clinic.  Students from Seneca and surrounding schools were able to receive physicals.  Thank you to Mrs. Fran Rosner and the Delta Theta Tau Sorority for their hard work.  On May 7th, North Campus held their annual art show in conjunction with the student talent show.  Ms. Kilday showcased student art work from throughout the year in the halls.  There were 15 student acts in the talent show featuring singing, dancing, gymnastics, and tap dancing.  Thank you to P.S.O., Mrs. Weber for planning the event, Mr. and Mrs. Edward for providing the sound system and Mrs. Ellis for her help with the student acts.  Classes have been busy finishing up the year with field trips.  Kindergarten visited the Children’s Museum in Bloomington; First Grade with their Camp Read A-lot visited the Yogi Bear Camp in Millbrook; Second Grade went on a nature walk at Pilcher Park in Joliet; Third Grade visited the Seneca High School FFA farm for their annual Fabulous Farm Adventure; and Fourth Grade visited the Long Grove Confectionary as a ending to their Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory novel study.  She thanked all the parent chaperones that were able to attend.  North Campus Field Day will be May 28th.

Thompson moved to approve a 3.5 percent increase for full-time year round salaried employees, seconded by Barla.

Thompson moved to approve an additional .10 cent increase per level in the current non-certified salary schedule, seconded by Barla.

Thompson moved to hire Michael Richards, music chorus teacher for the 2008-09 school year; seconded by Claggett.

Thompson moved to hire Steve Novario, 6th grade girls basketball coach, Mrs. Novotney, 8th grade girls basketball coach and Mr. Bilyeu, 7th grade girls basketball coach; seconded by Claggett.

Individual Member Report:  Brain Barla presented plans on changing the placement of crossing guard and crosswalk during bridge construction.  He also proposed a new traffic pattern for cars entering the parking lot.

 

Communications:  Mrs. Harbert, Shirley Smith, Susan Warning, Dan Anderson, North Campus Aides and the SEEA wrote thank yous to the board for the USB flash drives given out during teacher appreciation week.  North Campus Aides thanked the board for the gas cards they received.  Mrs. Graham also thanked the board for the bouquet of flowers given to her at her last SGS concert.
