BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

 

The Board of Education met at 6:45 p.m. at a public hearing to discuss the transfer of $450,000.00 from the transportation fund to the operations maintenance building fund.

 

President Bedeker called for roll call.

 

Present:  Baker, Barla, Quigley, Roseland, Sangston, Thompson and Bedeker. 

Absent:  None

 

No discussion from citizens.

 

Barla motioned to a adjourn hearing at 6:50 p.m.; seconded by Sangston.

The board of Education met for their regular scheduled meeting at 7:00 p.m. on June 16th, 2010 at the Seneca Grade School North Campus Board Room.

Baker moved to accept the minutes from the May 19th, 2010 meeting; seconded by Barla.

Hearing of Citizens:  Ted Bartelmey, partitioned the board to consider review of policy to allow homeschooled student to participate in extra curricular activities. 

 

Hearing of Teachers:  Patty Wagner, 6th grade teacher, is taking a writing workshop this summer and is getting ready to take on the new challenge of using Kindles in her classroom.  Julie Hamilton, 6th grade teacher, is busy with family and rejuvenating after the long school year.

 

Quigley moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report and investments as given by secretary:  Education $412,156.10; Building $66,379.02, Transportation $22,110.70, IMRF $17,577.56; LEASE $67,885.60, Tort $1,128.45, Total $587,237.43; seconded by Baker.

Baker moved to pay the following monthly bills:  Education $60,826.41, Building $29,394.50, Transportation $17,546.81, LEASE $67,885.60 Tort $1,128.45, Total $176,781.77; seconded by Roseland

Thompson moved to accept the transfer of $450,000.00 from the transportation fund to the OMB fund; seconded by Baker.

Thompson moved to accept the 2010 prevailing wage requirements for LaSalle County; seconded by Sangston.

Thompson moved to accept the lone bid for the replacement of 2005 passenger bus from Central States Bus Sales, Blue Bird bus, style A3FE, with luggage compartment for $52,343.00 including trade for delivery in September; seconded by Quigley.

Barla moved to proceed with contractors renovations at the South Campus Security Entrance not to exceed a total cost of $62,358.00; seconded by Sangston.

Supt. Misener reviewed the tentative summary of ISAT test scores with the Board. 

 

Thompson moved to change the regular scheduled meeting in July from the 21st to Tuesday, July 20th; seconded by Barla.

Principal McGhee reported on summer school, jump start classes starting July 19th.  Roughly 40 students will be participating in classes for 3 weeks, Monday thru Thursday for three hours per day.  Last week Seneca Grade School hosted the Camp Invention which over 40 students from the area participated in.  Principal McGhee and Mrs. Willand also recently attended a workshop on bullying and will share new ideas with staff.  She also reviewed the math and reading performance summaries for both AIMSweb and the Star testing programs.  Overall she is very pleased with student’s progress and will target areas that need growth. 

 

Barla moved to go into Executive Session at 7:30 p.m. for personnel and legal; seconded by Thompson.

Thompson moved to accept the resignation of Mark Giertz from this 7th grade literature/language teaching and coaching positions effective immediately with regret; seconded by Quigley.

Thompson moved to accept the resignation of Betty Novotney from her track coaching position; seconded by Quigley.

Thompson moved to honor the request to reassign Patty Wagner to the 7th grade literature/language position; seconded by Quigley.

Thompson moved to accept the resignation of Joni Harbert, 5th grade teacher, under option B, effective at the end of the 2010-2011 school year, with much regret; seconded by Quigley.

Thompson moved to accept the retirement, under option A, of Pat Johnson, Preschool teacher at the end of the 2013-2014 school year, with much regret; seconded by Sangston.

Thompson moved to grant Mrs. Feiner, 4th grade teacher maternity leave tentatively till September 13, 2010; seconded by Quigley.

Thompson moved increase hourly wages an additional .10 cents on top of the normal step level increases for non-certified hourly staff; seconded by Baker.

Thompson moved to increase wages 3.5 percent for all full-time non-certified salaried staff; seconded by Barla.

Communications:  Thank you was read from Joni Harbert for the paperweight she received for 20 years of service.  Thank you was read from the Dianne Bushman for the beautiful peace lily sent in remembrance of her mother.
