SENECA GRADE SCHOOL

BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

 

The board of Education met for their regular scheduled meeting at 7:00 p.m. on January 20th, 2010 at the Seneca Grade School North Campus Board Room.

 

President Bedeker called for roll call.

 

Present:  Baker, Barla, Roseland, Sangston, Thompson, and Bedeker.

Absent:  Quigley

 

Hearing of Citizens:  Principal Severson introduced the November Student of the Month, Jacey Lamboley.  She is the daughter of George and Kim Lamboley.  He also introduced Anna Baker, December’s student of the month.  She is the daughter Gerry and Kathy Baker.  He complimented both Jacey and Anna for being excellent role models and leaders in and outside the classroom.  Board congratulated the students on their achievements. 

 

Hearing of Teachers:  Sarah Schaefer, 3rd grade special education teacher, services 11 students throughout the day.  She is focusing with her students on test taking skills and getting ready for ISAT.  Next week she will be attending training for IAA, Alternetive Assessments which will benefit her students during testing.  Michael Richards, K-8 music teacher, reviewed each grade level and their lessons.  The 7 & 8 grades chorus students are getting ready for the Chorus Festival.  On April 10th, Seneca Grade School will be hosting the Solo & Ensemble Contest.  This will be a great opportunity for students to perform before judges.  Sixth grade students are finishing the 50’s unit, while 5th grade are singing the ISAT Blues and the 4th grade continues to learn and play more music on their recorders.

 

Baker moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report and investments as given by secretary:  Education $536,743.25; Building $83,767.97; Transportation $14,290.50, IMRF $17,767.50; LEASE $7,795.50, Life Safety, $367.00, Tort $6,064.50 Totaling $666,796.22; seconded by Thompson.

 

Yeas:  Baker, Barla, Roseland, Sangston, Thompson and Bedeker.

Nays:  None

 

Barla moved to pay the following monthly bills:  Education $27,418.39; Building $27682.72; Transportation $9,860.32; Tort $6,064.50; LEASE $7,795.50, Life Safety, $367.00 Total $79,188.43; seconded by Sangston.

 

Yeas:  Baker, Barla, Roseland, Sangston, Thompson and Bedeker.

Nays:  None

 

Quigley arrived at 7:14 p.m.

 

Roseland moved to amend the following board policies, 2:200, 2:250, 2:250-AP1, 2:250-E1, 2:250-E2, 4:110, 4:110-AP2, 5:10, 6:60, 6:60-AP, 7:10, 7:20, 7:180; seconded by Barla.

 

Yeas:  Baker, Barla, Quigley, Roseland, Sangston, Thompson and Bedeker.

Nays:  None

 

Quigley moved to approve the resolution authorizing Whitt Law to file tax complaint with the LaSalle County Board of Review for parcels 29-17-202-000 and 29-17-403-000 and to authorize Whitt Law to represent the District before the LaSalle County Board of Review; seconded by Barla.

Baker moved to solicit and RFP for Professional Auditing Services; seconded by Sangston.

Barla moved to name Dianne Bushman the FOIA Compliance Officer for the Seneca Grade School #170; seconded by Roseland.

Thompson moved to accept the natural gas contract with Nicor Enerchange for a term of 24 months to begin April, 2010; seconded by Quigley.  District will lock into 75% of the winter usage at a rate of .63 cent per therm.

Barla moved to renew the service agreement contract with Dynamic Controls, Inc. for a 3 year period for $9,256.00 per year; seconded by Sangston.

Baker moved to set the Board Study Session for Wednesday, February 10th, 2010, at 6:30 p.m. at the North Campus Board Room; seconded by Barla.

Principal Severson reviewed the overall discipline numbers since the beginning of the school year compared the previous year.  He is very please with teachers utilizing the school money system and supporting the discipline plan.  Principal Severson also gave a brief synopsis on the number of students that attended the honor roll assembly. 

 

Principal McGhee explained that on Institute Day teachers finished training on Star reading program.  She feels teachers already see how user friendly the program is and how helpful this will be for gathering data on students.  Mrs. Fabris is also looking into using it for RTI math testing along with AIMSweb.  Principal McGhee has started the push to prepare the students for ISAT testing coming up in March. 

 

Sangston moved to go into Executive Session at 7:45 p.m. for personnel and legal; seconded by Barla.

Thompson moved to return to Open Session at 8:03 p.m. seconded by Barla.

Thompson moved to grant the maternity leaves for both Kelly Mitchell and Sarah Schaefer; seconded by Baker.

Committee Report:  No Report

 

Communications:  SEEA thanked the Seneca Grade School Board of Education for the nice holiday party given to staff in their appreciation.  Mr. Misener also read thank you from Toys for Kids for the donation of wooden wheels that were left from the Industrial Arts program when it was dropped.
