SENECA GRADE SCHOOL

BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

 

The board of Education met for their regular scheduled meeting at 7:00 p.m. on February 17th, 2010 at the Seneca Grade School North Campus Board Room.

 

President Bedeker called for roll call.

 

Present:  Baker, Barla, Quigley, Sangston, Thompson, and Bedeker.

Absent:  Roseland

 

Hearing of Citizens:  None Present

 

Hearing of Teachers:  Stephanie Kirk, 5-8 Band Director, has 38 Solos and 11 Ensembles getting ready for contest to be hosted at Seneca on April 10th.  All Bands 5-8 as well as Jazz Band have started preparing for the Spring Concert.  On March 12th, chorus students will also be attending the chorus festival.  These events are great opportunities for students to perform for judges as well as the public.  Kathy Kilday, K-8 Art teacher, highlighted the different art projects each grade level is currently working on.  For the first time, a competition for seventh grade students to create a design for next year’s agenda book cover is underway.  The winning design will be chosen in March.  Students in grade K-8, also have the opportunity to participate in this year’s Doodle4Google competition using this year’s theme “If I Could Do Anything, I Would…”  Fourth grade created Mixed Media Collages that follow the theme “What makes your town Unique?”  This is part if a competition called All Kids Can…Create!  Artwork was submitted through Artsonia.

 

Baker moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report and investments as given by secretary:  Education $380,504.38; Building $69,671.50, Transportation $17,508.21, IMRF $17,139.16; LEASE $6,897.00, Tort $137.81 Totaling $491,858.06; seconded by Thompson.

Nays:  None

 

Barla moved to pay the following monthly bills:  Education $33,439.53; Building $35,309.54; Transportation $13,555.20; Tort $137.81; LEASE $6,897.00, Total $89,339.08; seconded by Thompson.

Nays:  None

 

Barla  moved to accept the certified seniority list as presented; seconded by Sangston.

Board directed reservations to be made for anyone planning on attending the April 6th, Starved Rock Division meeting. 

 

Board directed that senior citizen luncheon be scheduled for the ½ SIP day on April 21st, at 11:30 a.m. at the South Campus. 

 

Board directed Supt. Misener to precede with the preliminary work for the South Campus summer projects. 

 

Baker moved to accept the low transportation bid from Illinois Central School Bus, LLC for the next three years; seconded by Barla.  Supt. Misener explained the miles shared with the high school and the advantages this option would offer.

Principal McGhee reported that the LEASE Preschool Screening will be held on March 9th, 10th, and 11th for all 3 and 4 year old children planning on attending school in the fall.  She shared with the board the program, Motor Mom’s that Mrs. Yerly, P.E. teacher, has started with the Kindergarten students.  ISAT testing will start for all 3rd thru 8th grade students on March 2nd and end by the 12th.  Students will have a ISAT Pep Assembly on February 25th.  Principal McGhee also announced that the P.S.O. talent show will be held on March 24th at the North Campus. 

 

Barla moved to go into Executive Session at 7:25 p.m. for personnel and legal;  seconded by Sangston.

Barla moved to return to Open Session at 10:05 p.m. seconded by Thompson.

Thompson moved to hire a reading specialist for the 2010-2011 school year; seconded by Quigley.

Committee Report:  No Report

 

Communications:  Mendota Elementary School commended Principal McGhee and her staff for the wonderful opportunity to observe and network with teachers using the current reading curriculum at Seneca Grade School.

Barla moved to adjourn at 10:08 p.m.; seconded by Sangston.
