BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

 

The board of Education met for scheduled meeting at 7:00 p.m. on April 21st, 2010 at the Seneca Grade School North Campus Board Room.

 

Vice President Thompson called for roll call.

 

Present:  Baker, Quigley, Roseland, Sangston, and Thompson

Absent:  Barla, Bedeker and Quigley

 

Baker moved to accept the minutes from the March 18th, 2010; seconded by Sangston. 

 

Yeas:   Baker, Roseland, Sangston, and Thompson.

Nays:  None

 

Quigley arrived  at 7:03 p.m. 

 

Hearing of Citizens:  None Present

 

Hearing of Teachers:  Pam Gillis, K-2 reading specialist teacher, highlighted the benefits the new “Soar to Success” intervention kit.  She will also be testing and benchmarking students for RTI in May.  Mark Giertz, 7th grade literature and language teacher, is currently reading historical novels.  He also reviewed the impact the word of the day has had in relationship to his curriculum.

 

Baker moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report and investments as given by secretary:  Education $383,674.42; Building $67,967.04, Transportation $18,819.47, IMRF $17,481.77; Tort $5,150.50, Life Safety $5,150.50 Totaling $498,191.93; seconded by Quigley.

Nays:  None

 

Quigley moved to pay the following monthly bills:  Education $35,138.96, Building $31,590.25, Transportation $15,384.03, Tort $5,098.73, Life Safety $5,150.00 Total $92,362.47; seconded by Roseland.

Sangston moved to approve the resolution authorizing appeal to the State of Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board; seconded by Roseland.

Baker moved to approve the amended 2009-2010 Seneca Community Grade School calendar as presented by Supt. Misener; seconded by Thompson.  The calendar reflects one additional day that was taken as a snow day.  Teacher’s Institute day will be May 27, followed by report card day on May 28th, no bus service will run on Friday.  Last full day of school is Wednesday May 26th, 2010 for students.

Supt. Misener reviewed the new format and covered the few minor changes in the 2010-2011 Student/Parent Handbook.  Board moved to table approval until next meeting. 

 

Tim Pratt, Systems Engineer, outlined technology goals with the board.  Recommendations include adding a second T1 line and additional computers for the South Campus.  Baker moved to accept the 2010 technology projects; seconded by Sangston.

Roseland moved to keep the current registration, lunch and breakfast fees for the 2010-2011 the school year the same; seconded by Quigley.  Registration packets will again be sent home the last week of school with students.  Parents will have the opportunity to return material early to receive discount.

Baker moved to award the firm low milk bid to Prairie Farms Dairy, Streator for the 2010-2011 school year; seconded by Sangston.

Board moved to accept the lone bread bid to IBC Sales Corp., Peoria.

Quigley moved to purchase from Atwood Tree farm 51 white pine trees to be planted on the east and north fence line along the baseball and soccer fields; seconded by Baker.

Board directed Supt. Misener to select option two in regards to the boiler replacement at the South Campus. 

 

Principal McGhee reviewed the current schedule of field trips coming in the next couple of weeks.  One hundred twenty students participated in Wednesday’s P.S.O. Walkathon.  While several other students also participated in the Young Author’s luncheon held at Grand Bear Lodge. During the SIP day afternoon teachers did a great job presenting information on the “Six Traits of Writing”.  This will kickoff the continuing focus on writing.  North Campus students will be planting a tree in honor of Earth Day donated by the Spring Grove Nursery on Friday.

 

Principal Severson highlighted the events of the 6th grade science fair.  He commended Ms. Morris and all the 6th grade participates on a fine job.  He congratulated the 3 grand prize winners, Avri Bland, Emma Bedeker, and Jacob Weinreich.  He also congratulated Emma Bedeker and Lyle Marshall for being picked as winners of the Coal Calendar Awards essay contest.  Winners are invited to attend a luncheon in Springfield at the Executive Mansion.  Over 105 students along with parents and staff spent the night at the P.S.O. lock-in at the Illinois Valley YMCA.  Wednesday senior citizens enjoyed student entertainment and lunch at the South Campus.  Some of the extra activities held this month included the Solo & Ensemble Contest and the IVC Conference Scholastic meet.  Graduation Day is scheduled for May 25th, South Campus at 7:00 p.m. 

 

Sangston moved to go into Executive Session at 8:10 p.m. for personnel and legal; seconded by Thompson.

Baker moved to return to Open Session at 9:10 p.m.; seconded by Quigley.

Barla moved to accept the resignation from Dan Anderson for the 8th grade boy’s basketball coaching position, with regret; seconded by Roseland.

Baker moved to rehire Shane Severson, South Campus principal and Lynn McGhee, North Campus principal for the 2010-2011 school year; seconded bySangton.
